Doctoral Symposium

in conjunction with the GII Doctoral School on Advances in Databases

September 18-19, 2009

Hotel S. Michele, Cetraro - Italy

http://wwwinfo.deis.unical.it/giischool2009/symposium.htm

The Doctoral Symposium intends bringing together PhD students in Computer Engineering and in Computer Science providing them

the opportunity to present and discuss their research in progress in a constructively critical atmosphere, and to meet

other researchers at a similar stage of their career.

More precisely, the goals of the symposium are:

- give PhD students the chance to illustrate their research - provide them with valuable feedback on behalf of senior researchers

- facilitate their interaction with other researchers - provide guidelines on how to write a PhD Dissertation

- attend the Summer School

The Symposium is intended for young researchers that have not completed their research or written their dissertation before

the Summer School. Participants are doctoral students, preferably at a mid-point in their dissertation work (i.e. are at least 12

months from defending their dissertation, but have at least a preliminary research design), who will present their work at the symposium and receive feedback from the symposium advisors and other attendees.

The Symposium will be held in conjunction with the Doctoral School on Advances in Databases.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Students willing to participate are asked to submit a paper between 3-6 pages containing: an introduction to the research

(research question which formulates the technical problem faced, motivation of the problem, background and existing work

the research builds on along with existing solutions in literature); the proposed technical solution (existing and

planned contributions to the solution of the problem, innovative aspects of the solution); research methods used or

that will be used in the research; current status of the research and results thus far; progress and plan to complete

the research.

Also, students should provide a reference letter in PDF format on behalf of their dissertation advisor.

Contributions should be written in English, in PDF format, using the Springer LNCS style available at

http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0, and sent to giischool2009@si.deis.unical.it.

Papers will undergo a review process on behalf of the Doctoral Symposium Committee which will select participants according to

the potential quality of the research and its relevance and the stage of the research.
